Aussex Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious collision involving multiple vehicles on the A259 at Ovingdean.
The incident happened during the afternoon of Thursday, 8 January, after officers began responding to reports of a stolen Royal Mail van in the Saltdean area. The vehicle was first reported on Hamsey Road shortly after 2.30pm.
Police later located the van and attempted to stop it in Peacehaven at around 3.05pm. A short time later, at approximately 3.10pm, the van was involved in a collision with four other vehicles on the A259 near Ovingdean.
Emergency services attended the scene, and while several vehicles were damaged, no other drivers or passengers required hospital treatment. The road was closed in both directions for a period, causing delays while officers carried out enquiries and cleared the scene.
A 20-year-old man from Peacehaven was arrested at the location on suspicion of a number of offences, including dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, driving without insurance, and aggravated vehicle taking. He was taken to hospital as a precaution before being released back into police custody.
Sussex Police are now asking anyone who witnessed the collision, saw the vehicle being driven beforehand, or who may have dashcam or CCTV footage from the area at the time, to come forward.
Information can be reported to Sussex Police online or by contacting them directly, quoting serial 707 of 08/01.
