A serious assault that left a 16-year-old boy with potentially life-changing injuries has resulted in the arrest of three men, Sussex Police have confirmed.
The incident took place at around 5:40 PM on Monday, July 28, on Sydney Road, Haywards Heath. According to police, the teenager was first struck by a blue vehicle before being violently assaulted by two men armed with weapons.
The three suspects — aged 19, 21, and 23 — are all from the Mid Sussex area and have been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. They remain in custody as detectives continue their investigation.
Police are urging witnesses or anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward. The force is particularly keen to hear from individuals who saw the blue car driving away from the railway station area shortly after the incident.
Ch Insp Steve Turner addressed public concern, stating, “We understand the impact this incident has had on the community and the very real concerns about safety. That’s why we’ve increased visible patrols in the area, and these will continue in the days ahead.”
An extensive forensic search of the scene is underway, with police officers combing the area for evidence. The force described the public’s response to their initial appeal as “tremendous” and is hopeful that further information will assist in building a clearer picture of the events.
Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact Sussex Police online or by calling 101, quoting Operation Wingate. Alternatively, information can be reported anonymously via Crimestoppers.
The victim remains in hospital, where he is being treated for injuries that police say may have life-changing consequences.
