The Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Councillor Amanda Grimshaw, has officially opened a newly extended and refurbished gym at Portslade Sports Centre following a major investment programme.
The project has transformed the existing gym, almost doubling its size and delivering a modernised fitness space featuring upgraded flooring, enhanced audio and visual systems, and a wide range of new exercise equipment. The redevelopment has also included significantly improved changing and washroom facilities for users.
Funding for the scheme was provided through Section 106 contributions, alongside investment from Freedom Leisure, which operates the centre on behalf of the council. The works form part of the council’s wider Sports Facilities Investment Plan, aimed at improving local sports infrastructure and encouraging more residents to lead active lifestyles.
The revamped gym opened its doors in late December, allowing residents to begin the New Year with access to a larger and more modern fitness environment.
During the opening ceremony, Cllr Grimshaw cut the ribbon and praised the impact of the development on the local community.
She said the new facility offers significantly more space and equipment, giving people of all ages and abilities the chance to improve their health and work towards their fitness goals.
Cllr Grimshaw also highlighted that the gym has been designed to be inclusive, welcoming everyone from seasoned gym users to students from Portslade Aldridge Community Academy, some of whom attended the launch event.
She thanked the council’s sports facilities team, Freedom Leisure, the Bailey Partnership and Shellmar Construction for their role in delivering the project, describing it as another important step in strengthening sports provision across the city.
Jason Musk, Area Manager for Freedom Leisure, said the organisation was extremely pleased with the outcome of the refurbishment.
He described the project as a strong example of partnership working and said the upgraded gym will help establish Portslade Sports Centre as one of the leading fitness venues in the region, welcoming residents from both Portslade and Hove.
