A man has been charged following a serious early morning incident in Waterside Close, Crawley, which prompted a local primary school to issue a safety notice to parents.
At approximately 7am on Tuesday 9 July, Sussex Police were called to reports of an altercation in Waterside Close. A 34-year-old man was found with minor injuries, and a 37-year-old man, later identified as Dean Heron, was arrested at the scene.
Heron, who is of no fixed address, has been charged with:
- Attempting to cause grievous bodily harm
- Intentional strangulation
- Possession of a bladed article
- Criminal damage
He was due to appear before Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 10 July.
Police have confirmed that the incident is believed to be isolated and posed no wider threat to the community.
However, the incident’s proximity and timing led Waterfield Primary School, located nearby, to take precautionary action.
In an email sent to parents on Tuesday morning, the school informed families that no pupils would be allowed to walk to or from school without an adult until the end of the term, which concludes on Friday 18 July.
The school stated:
“I have just been made aware of an incident which happened close to the school site, early this morning. Police responded to the incident and I am writing to families as a precautionary measure… To ensure the safety of ALL – I am asking the following: NO pupils are to walk to or from school without an adult until the end of this term.”
The message also included special arrangements for Year 6 pupils and after-school collection protocols, reinforcing the school’s commitment to student safety.
Sussex Police are urging anyone with information related to the incident to contact them via 101 or online.
