righton & Hove City Council has appointed a new City Centre Manager as part of efforts to make the heart of the city cleaner, safer and more welcoming for residents, workers and visitors alike.

The newly created role is designed to provide focused oversight of the city centre, bringing together multiple council services to tackle long-standing issues in a more coordinated way. Councillor Tim Rowkins, Cabinet Member for Net Zero and Environmental Services, said the appointment reflects the importance of giving the city centre the attention it needs.

He explained that the role cuts across different council departments, allowing the city centre to be managed as a single area rather than through fragmented services. “This joined-up approach is already making a difference,” he said, adding that early progress has been encouraging.

The decision to introduce the post followed feedback from local businesses, the Brighton Business Improvement District (BID) and the Hoteliers Association, all of whom highlighted the need for greater focus on the city centre environment.

Since taking up the position, City Centre Manager Laszlo has been working on the ground daily, engaging directly with businesses and residents while coordinating action with council teams and external partners. His work includes identifying problem areas, improving cleanliness and safety, and supporting community-led initiatives.

The initial focus has been on the main route from Brighton Station to the seafront, a key gateway for visitors. This area has already seen positive responses from businesses and the public. Plans are now being developed with local traders to extend improvements to other parts of the city centre, including potential sponsorship for new planting and environmental enhancements.

Gavin Stewart, Executive Director of Brighton BID, welcomed the move, saying businesses are already seeing the benefits of a more streamlined approach. He said having a single, dedicated contact for city centre issues is an important step towards creating a more attractive and vibrant environment.
