Crawley Police responded to a welfare call in Perryfield Road, Southgate, on Friday 30 January, after reports of a suspected firearm.
The incident, which occurred just after midday, prompted an immediate response from officers, including armed units, to ensure the safety of the public and the individual involved.
A 66-year-old man was safely detained at the scene and subsequently arrested on suspicion of unlawful possession of a firearm. He remains in police custody as enquiries continue.
Inspector Dave Bulger said:
“This was an isolated incident and we acknowledge the impact it may have had on the community. We thank everyone for their patience while road closures were in place. Officers will continue patrols in the local area to provide reassurance and anyone with concerns is encouraged to stop and speak with them.”
The road closures have since been lifted and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
