A Brighton man has been sentenced to four years and six months in prison after being convicted of raping one teenage girl and attempting to rape another.

Toby MacKenzie, 24, of Carlyle Street, committed the offences in 2018. In one case, a 16-year-old girl was sexually assaulted during a holiday. In a separate incident, a 15-year-old girl was raped at MacKenzie’s home after being given alcohol. She was attacked twice while unable to leave the room.

Text messages recovered from the victim’s phone showed she had not consented, and MacKenzie apologised following the assault.

He was arrested and charged with two counts of rape, attempted rape of a woman over 16, and assault by penetration. MacKenzie was convicted at Brighton Crown Court on 7 November.

Detective Constable Stewart Cameron praised the victims for their courage in coming forward and encouraged anyone affected by sexual offences to report them to the police.
