A domestic abuser who tried to suffocate a woman in Worthing has been sentenced to two years in prison.

Enzo Giarratano, 54, of North End Road, West Kensington, assaulted a woman known to him at an address in Worthing on 18 January 2023. During the attack, he prevented her from leaving, putting his hands over her mouth and nose, leaving her fearing for her life.

The victim attempted to escape, crying out for help, but Giarratano pulled her back into the property. The assault only ended when a neighbour came to the front door and confronted him.

At Lewes Crown Court on 16 January, Giarratano admitted two counts of intentional suffocation. The court heard from the victim about the long-lasting impact of the attack, which has left her with fear of leaving home, nightmares, and panic attacks.

Investigator Jake Saunders of Sussex Police said:

“The victim reported this traumatic incident and has shown great courage. I would also like to thank the neighbour who supported the victim and called the police. We take reports of domestic violence and abuse extremely seriously. In this case, a dangerous offender has admitted his offences in court and is now serving a significant custodial sentence.”

Sussex Police urged anyone experiencing domestic abuse to come forward and report incidents, assuring victims that their safety and well-being are a priority.
