A group of wildlife volunteers has successfully rescued several deer that became trapped inside a fenced field in Climping, West Sussex, following the preparation of land for development.
Concerns were raised by local residents after fencing was installed around the field, leaving the deer with no clear escape route. People living nearby reported seeing the animals repeatedly running along the perimeter, appearing distressed and unable to leave the enclosed area.
The situation prompted wildlife rescuers to step in after fears grew that the deer could injure themselves or attempt to flee onto nearby roads. A coordinated rescue operation was organised, involving experienced handlers and animal welfare specialists.
Using careful planning to minimise stress, the team safely contained the deer and relocated them to a more suitable rural location where they could return to their natural habitat. A veterinary professional was present during the operation to monitor the animals’ wellbeing throughout the rescue.
Residents welcomed the outcome, praising the volunteers for their swift action and dedication. Many said the incident highlighted the need for greater consideration of wildlife when land is enclosed or prepared for construction.
Wildlife groups have since called for improved assessments before fencing is installed on development sites, warning that barriers can unintentionally trap animals that rely on open land for movement and grazing.
The successful rescue has been described as a positive example of community awareness and cooperation, ensuring the safety of local wildlife while preventing further risk to the animals and the public.
