Emergency services were called to Chichester Marina, Birdham, last night following reports of a large fire and explosions on board a vessel.
Selsey Coastguard said their team was paged after explosions were heard from a boat on fire in the marina. West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service also attended with Three fire engines, the fire spread to a second vessel and caused damage to several others nearby.
Both vessels were eventually lost to the flames and sank, despite crews’ best attempts to save them.
Staff from Chichester Marina, the Harbour Master and Chichester Harbour Conservancy supported the response at the scene.
Selsey Coastguard confirmed their team was stood down and returned to station at 00:45 this morning.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are expected to follow.
