A lorry driver has been jailed after causing a serious multi-vehicle crash on the A27 near Chichester which left three people with life-changing injuries.

Kuljinder Singh, 45, of Ennis Square, Redcar in North Yorkshire, was sentenced to three years and 10 months in prison after admitting three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was also disqualified from driving for four year and 11 months.

The crash happened at around 4.15pm on 8 August 2022 on the eastbound carriageway of the A27 between the Fishbourne and Stockbridge roundabouts. Singh was driving a Mercedes HGV when he failed to brake for stationary traffic ahead and ploughed into the back of a van.

Footage from inside the cab showed the lorry still accelerating and travelling at more than 50mph at the time of impact. The collision involved several other vehicles, with one car overturning onto its roof.

Three people were seriously hurt, suffering life-changing injuries. One victim described regaining consciousness inside the wreckage, choking on blood, and unsure whether their colleague beside them was still alive. Another said the crash had “changed my life in every way” and believed the collision was entirely avoidable.

Police found no evidence of mobile phone use or intoxication, but investigators said Singh’s failure to react showed “a complete lack of attention” and driving “far below the standard expected of a competent driver.”

Sergeant Mark Farrow of the Roads Policing Unit said:
“This was a highly distressing collision that has had devastating consequences for the victims. Lorry drivers carry a great responsibility due to the potential harm their vehicles can cause, and Singh’s dangerous driving demonstrates the catastrophic impact of inattention behind the wheel.”

The case was heard at Portsmouth Crown Court on 10 October, where the judge highlighted the severity of Singh’s actions and the lasting trauma experienced by those involved.

Police said the sentence should serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and safe driving, particularly for heavy goods vehicle drivers on busy roads.
