Emergency services responded in the early hours of Monday morning after a vehicle collided with a gas substation on Pagham Road, Pagham.
A spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said they were alerted at 3.48am to reports of a serious road traffic collision.
“Joint Fire Control mobilised three fire engines to the scene,” she confirmed.
“Upon arrival crews found a vehicle that had collided with a gas substation. Firefighters helped put in place a 100-metre cordon and evacuated a small number of people from their homes as a precaution.
“Firefighters remain on scene alongside West Sussex County Council’s Resilience and Emergencies Team and officers from Arun District Council, and we are working alongside SGN to make the scene safe while they carry out repairs.
“Parts of Pagham Road are expected to remain closed, and we would encourage people to avoid the area for the time being.”
SGN, who operate the gas network across the south of England, also issued an update following the incident.
In a statement, the company said: “We’re supporting the emergency services near the junction of Pagham Road and Hook Lane after a vehicle collided with our gas network this morning.
To ensure everyone’s safety while our engineers assess the damage, Pagham Road and Hook Lane are closed at this junction. A signed diversion route is in place for affected motorists.”
Engineers remain at the scene and motorists are advised to follow diversion signs and avoid the area where possible. Further updates are expected throughout the day.
