Two repeat offenders from Bognor Regis have been sentenced after carrying out a series of shoplifting offences in the run-up to Christmas.
Lee Moore, 48, of High Street, Bognor Regis, stole more than £550 worth of goods from a number of local shops between 27 November and 15 December. Items taken included champagne, pet accessories and cleaning products.
His offending culminated on 15 December when he was caught stealing goods worth £312. On the same day, he also took a parcel from a residential doorstep. Moore was arrested by police and later charged with five counts of shop theft and one count of theft including theft by finding.
He pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates’ Court and was remanded in custody. On 17 December, Moore was sentenced to six months in prison and ordered to pay £75 in compensation.
Jason Brookes, 41, of no fixed address, was also sentenced for shoplifting offences committed between 29 November and 15 December. Brookes stole items including gingerbread, salmon and cleaning products from local stores.
He pleaded guilty to three counts of shop theft and was given a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. Brookes was also ordered to pay a £154 surcharge and complete ten days of rehabilitation activity.
Sussex Police said the sentences demonstrate their commitment to tackling repeat shoplifting and encouraged retailers and members of the public to continue reporting offences.
