Motorists are being warned to expect road closures and traffic restrictions across parts of Brighton on days when Brighton & Hove Albion play at home at the American Express Community Stadium.
The temporary measures, introduced by Brighton & Hove City Council, are aimed at managing congestion and improving safety during football match days, when tens of thousands of supporters travel to and from the stadium.
Road Closures and One-Way Systems
On home match days, sections of Mill Road and Woollards Way will be closed to through traffic for several hours. During the restriction period, affected sections of road will operate as one-way only, primarily to assist with the safe movement of supporters leaving the stadium.
The closures can remain in place for up to eight hours, depending on kick-off times and crowd movements. Pedestrian access will remain unaffected, and diversion routes will be clearly signposted.
Advice for Supporters and Drivers
Drivers are strongly encouraged to avoid the immediate area around the stadium on match days where possible. Public transport is recommended, with trains and buses operating additional services before and after matches.
Supporters with valid match tickets can also take advantage of the club’s free local travel zone, allowing travel on participating buses and trains within the Brighton area for a set period around kick-off.
Park-and-ride services, including sites at Brighton Racecourse and Mill Road, are also available to reduce the number of vehicles entering residential areas close to the ground.
Impact on Local Residents
Residents living near the stadium are reminded that match-day parking controls will be enforced. Only vehicles displaying valid permits are allowed to park in restricted zones, and enforcement officers will be active throughout the day.
The council has previously advised residents to ensure visitor permits are arranged in advance to avoid penalties on match days.
Plan Ahead
Traffic congestion is expected on major routes into the city, including the A23 and A27, particularly before kick-off and after the final whistle. Motorists are advised to allow extra time for journeys, follow signage, and consider alternative routes or transport options.
Further information on match-day travel arrangements can be found through Brighton & Hove Albion FC and the city council.
