A Sussex Police officer has been dismissed without notice after engaging in an inappropriate WhatsApp conversation with a member of the public.
PC Peter May was the subject of a two-day misconduct hearing which concluded today (9 September).
The hearing was told that PC May had communicated via WhatsApp with a woman he met during the course of a criminal investigation. During the conversation, he suggested she could stay at his house or go for a drink with him — behaviour the panel found was motivated by a desire to pursue a sexual and improper relationship.
The panel ruled that PC May’s conduct amounted to gross misconduct, citing a breach of professional behaviour standards, specifically a lack of integrity.
He has been dismissed from the force without notice.
Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Gillies said:
“This was an unacceptable betrayal of the trust placed in this officer by a member of the public.
“PC May abused his position of responsibility, and has rightly faced the consequences of his actions.
“We will continue to work hard to improve the standards of policing in Sussex to ensure the public receive the service they deserve.”
