A man from Surrey has been found not guilty of raping a woman in Brighton, following a trial at Lewes Crown Court.

Mohammed Adam, 23, of Dorking, was acquitted by a jury on Thursday, May 8, after being charged in connection with an alleged incident that took place on Wednesday, October 23 last year.

Police were contacted by a 20-year-old local woman who reported being raped. She was supported by specially trained officers throughout the investigation, while Adam was remanded in custody ahead of trial.

At the conclusion of the court proceedings, Adam was found not guilty, but was handed a four-year restraining order preventing him from contacting the woman involved.

Detective Constable Owen Watkins of Sussex Police said:

“We commend the woman for coming forward. We thoroughly investigated this case and presented it to the court, and we respect the decision of the jury.
We continue to encourage anyone who experiences sexual offences to report them, with the confidence that we will listen, investigate, and provide full support and safeguarding.”

Police reiterated their commitment to supporting survivors and ensuring each case is handled with care and professionalism, regardless of the outcome in court.
