A 15-year-old pupil has been found dead at Roedean School in Brighton in what police have described as a sudden and unexplained death.
Emergency services were called to the independent girls’ boarding school, located on Roedean Way near the clifftops east of the city, during the evening of Wednesday, January 28. Despite the attendance of police officers and paramedics, the teenager was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Sussex Police have confirmed that an investigation is under way to establish the circumstances surrounding the death. Officers said there is currently no indication that the incident is suspicious, and enquiries are continuing as a matter of procedure.
The girl’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
In a statement issued following the incident, Roedean School said the death had come as a profound shock to the school community. Staff and pupils have been offered pastoral care and additional support as they come to terms with the loss.
Roedean School is a well-known independent day and boarding school for girls aged 11 to 18, founded in the late 19th century and situated on a prominent clifftop site overlooking the English Channel.
Police have said they are working closely with the school and other relevant agencies. No further details have been released at this stage.
The death will be subject to the usual formal processes, and further information may be made available once enquiries are complete.
