Port pledges to preserve public access and invest in community improvements
Shoreham Port has shared plans for a potential acquisition of the beach, land, and buildings adjacent to Basin Road South in Southwick from Adur District Council.
As a Trust Port established by an Act of Parliament in 1760, Shoreham Port is governed by local legislation and managed by an independent board acting in the best interests of the community. All profits are reinvested into improving the Port and its facilities, rather than distributed to shareholders.
The Port currently maintains beaches on either side of the proposed acquisition area and has invested heavily in improvements over recent years, including:
- New sheet piling along Basin Road
- A pedestrian path linking the Shoreham Beach car park to the harbour arm
- Newly installed beach huts
The Port has committed to retaining public access to the beach permanently should the acquisition go ahead.
Future plans include integrating the area into an ongoing coastal protection scheme in partnership with the Environment Agency, enhancing beach access and protection in the coming years.
Shoreham Port is also progressing with the Southwick Reef biodiversity project, due to complete within the next 12 months. This includes the construction of 17 new beach huts near the existing car park and educational efforts to connect biodiversity data with global environmental projects.
A spokesperson for Shoreham Port said:
“We recognise that the Port and beaches are special places for many people. Our plan is to ensure this area continues to be enjoyed by all, while investing where it’s needed.”
The Port holds an annual public meeting in June and invites feedback from the public at any time. For more information or to view their performance and plans, visit shoreham-port.co.uk or email info@shoreham-port.co.uk.
