The incident occurred around 7.10pm on Saturday, 21 June, near St Mary’s Church Causeway, shortly after a couple were seen leaving The Big Gig at the nearby cricket field.
Officers responding to reports of a disturbance were themselves attacked during the course of the incident. One officer sustained injuries that required hospital treatment and was discharged the following day.
Sussex Police have since confirmed that Oliver Latimer, 29, of St Mary’s Gardens, Horsham, was arrested and subsequently charged with the following offences:
- Attempted wounding with intent
- Assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH)
- Two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker
- Three counts of assault by beating
- One count of affray
Latimer appeared before Crawley Magistrates’ Court on 23 June, and was bailed to appear before Lewes Crown Court on 21 July.
Police are now urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has video footage — and has not yet spoken to officers — to come forward.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police online or call 101, quoting serial 1255 of 21/06.
