A motorist who reportedly drove through warning lights at East Guldeford in Rye level crossing has caused serious damage to the crossing’s control systems, triggering major disruption to rail services and compounding delays on nearby roads.
Network engineers were unable to reach the scene immediately because of severe traffic congestion around the crossing, delaying repairs. The barriers remain out of service and all rail lines through Rye are currently closed.
Train services affected
- Southern Rail (Marshlink line):
- Services from Eastbourne towards Ashford International are terminating at Rye and returning east.
- No trains are operating between Rye and Ashford International in either direction, affecting Appledore and Ham Street.
- Alternatives:
- Passengers may use Southeastern services between Hastings
Tonbridge and Tonbridge
Ashford International (note these do not call at Rye, Appledore or Ham Street).

- Replacement buses:
- Requested, but operators warn journeys will be significantly delayed due to road congestion near the crossing.
- Allow extra time: Southern advises passengers to allow at least 60 minutes of additional travel time.
Roads also impacted
Local roads near the crossing have been closed for safety, adding to congestion through Rye and the surrounding A259 corridor. Drivers should avoid the area, follow signed diversions and expect long delays.
Investigation
Police have not yet confirmed whether the driver responsible has been identified. Anyone with dashcam or eyewitness footage from around 9:00pm on Tuesday near the crossing is asked to contact police.
