I recently visited The North Star in Brighton and came away pleasantly surprised. It’s one of those pubs that doesn’t try too hard — and that’s exactly its strength.

The first thing you notice is the character. It has that proper, traditional pub feel — slightly worn in places but in a way that adds to its authenticity rather than detracts from it. It feels local, lived-in, and welcoming

No gimmicks, no forced “gastropub” vibe — just a straightforward Brighton pub doing what it does well.
There’s a relaxed crowd: a mix of regulars, students, and the occasional visitor. It’s not pretentious and not overly polished, which makes it comfortable. You can actually have a conversation without shouting, something that’s becoming rare.

Service was friendly and efficient. Staff were approachable, no attitude, no unnecessary delays. Drinks were served promptly, and you felt acknowledged rather than ignored — which, frankly, makes a difference.

A solid selection behind the bar. Well-kept pints, decent choice of lagers and ales, and fair pricing for Brighton standards. Nothing outrageous on the price front, which is refreshing in a city where some venues seem to think they’re in central London.

The pub was clean and tidy. Tables were cleared promptly and the general upkeep was good. Toilets were acceptable — not luxury hotel standard, but absolutely fine for a busy pub.

The North Star isn’t trying to be something it’s not. It’s a proper Brighton pub with character, decent service, fair prices, and a relaxed atmosphere. Sometimes that’s exactly what you want.
