Repair work has begun on a historic bridge in East Sussex following a structural inspection that identified worn timber decking.

The Environment Agency confirmed that contractors have started repairs on Southease Bridge, the Victorian truss bridge spanning the tidal River Ouse between Lewes and Newhaven.

A recent inspection found that sections of the deck and kerb timbers had become worn and needed replacing. The work marks the first major repairs since the bridge was fully refurbished in 2010.

Engineering firm Mackley began the repair work on March 12 and expects the project to take around four to six weeks to complete.

Despite the works, the bridge will remain open throughout the project, although traffic management will be in place and users may experience delays of up to 15 minutes.

The bridge carries the South Downs Way and provides an important crossing for farm vehicles, walkers, cyclists and horse riders using the public bridleway.

Officials have thanked the public for their patience while the essential repairs are carried out. 🚧🌉
