Raimonds Vilde has been charged following an incident in Middleton‑on‑Sea that saw two police officers assaulted and drink‑driving offences alleged, according to Sussex Police.
Officers were called to Lane End Road at around 6pm on Sunday, 1 March, after reports that a vehicle was stopped in the middle of the road with the driver appearing to be asleep at the wheel. Upon arrival, two police officers approached the vehicle and were subsequently assaulted by a man at the scene.
One officer sustained a head injury during the confrontation and was taken to hospital for medical checks and treatment.
The suspect has been identified as 40‑year‑old, of Sycamore Road in Bognor. He has been charged not only with drink‑driving but also with inflicting grievous bodily harm on a police officer and assaulting the other officer.
Vilde was remanded to appear at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 3 March in connection with the charges arising from the incident.
Sussex Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
