A prolific shoplifter in Eastbourne has been handed an electronic tag and a three-year criminal behaviour order (CBO) as part of a drive by Sussex Police to tackle repeat offending.
Shane Monery, 36, of Hamsey Close, Eastbourne, appeared before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 16 February after being charged with 10 counts of shoplifting across the town.
At court he received a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, alongside a rehabilitation activity requirement. He was also issued with a three-year criminal behaviour order and a 12-month electronic tagging requirement.
Tagging and strict retail bans imposed
The criminal behaviour order places several restrictions on Monery, including bans on entering any retail premises from which he has been formally prohibited and all Co-operative stores in East Sussex.
Police said his offending took place over several months and saw him repeatedly target the Co-op supermarket on Albert Parade in Eastbourne, causing significant losses to the business.
The tagging order forms part of a wider initiative across Sussex to reduce repeat offending and support local retailers affected by persistent shoplifting.
Police vow to tackle business crime
Chief Superintendent Katy Woolford said:
“Business crime has an enormous impact on our towns, local businesses and the community.
“We will use all of the tools at our disposal to support businesses and ensure that prolific offenders are brought to justice.
“In Sussex we are leading the way with this innovative scheme to tackle repeat offenders and we will continue to work closely with our partners to protect our business community.”
