A major power outage swept through Eastbourne’s town centre on Sunday, June 23, after an underground cable fault disrupted electricity across Terminus Road and nearby streets. The blackout plunged popular venues—including McDonald’s, KFC, Wetherspoons, and various retail outlets—into darkness, while traffic lights also went offline.
UK Power Networks Emergency Response
Engineers arrived at the scene just after 8pm on Sunday and began investigations at the local substation before tracing the fault further along the cable network. Initial updates suggested restoration in the early hours of Monday, but crews had to excavate the affected underground route to carry out full cable repairs.
A spokesperson explained: “This sort of fault is challenging to pinpoint—heat from a developing issue can temporarily seal the cable, causing intermittent outages. We’re grateful to customers for their patience while our specialist teams completed the repair.”
Resolution and Reopening
Full power was successfully restored on Monday, June 24, once engineers had completed the excavation and reinstated the damaged cable. Shops and traffic systems have now returned to normal.
Eastbourne businesses have resumed regular trading, and UK Power Networks continues to monitor the area to prevent any recurrence.
