A dramatic police pursuit unfolded in Lindfield at around 10am this morning after a silver 2011 Citroën Berlingo sped out of Brushes Lane and turned left onto the High Street while being pursued by a police dog unit.
Witnesses reported that the van accelerated rapidly as it entered the High Street. During the pursuit, a fire extinguisher was discharged from the suspect vehicle into the path of the trailing police car in what appeared to be an attempt to obstruct officers.
Moments later, a loud bang was heard as the van collided with a wall outside South Downs Cellars. The impact brought the vehicle to a sudden halt.
The occupants immediately abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot down Alma Road. A police dog and handler gave chase as additional units were dispatched to the area. Along the escape route, items including a left shoe, a right shoe and a mobile phone were found, apparently discarded during the pursuit.
Multiple police vehicles converged on Newton Road shortly afterwards, where a man was apprehended.
Sussex Police have been approached for comment regarding any injuries or potential charges.
