Sussex Police have released an update following their presence at a protest held in Brighton city centre on Saturday, February 28 2026.

Officers confirmed they were in attendance to facilitate peaceful demonstration while ensuring public safety throughout the event. The protest, which drew opposing groups into the city centre, saw a number of reported incidents dealt with by police.

During the course of the afternoon, a 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. He was subsequently de-arrested following further enquiries.

A 66-year-old man from London was also arrested after an allegation of common assault was made. He too was later de-arrested.

In addition, officers received reports concerning a woman who was using a loud hailer to lead chants during the protest. Police acknowledged the potential impact that some of the language reported to have been used may have within local communities.

The matter is currently being assessed and reviewed in line with relevant legislation and operational guidance to determine whether any criminal offences have been committed. Sussex Police stated that, should criminality be identified, appropriate action will be taken.

The investigation and review process remains ongoing.
