Passengers travelling on the Brighton Main Line have faced significant disruption Tuesday 22/10/2025 after multiple issues caused widespread delays and cancellations.
Network Rail has apologised to customers of Southern, Thameslink, and Gatwick Express, following a series of incidents that affected services through Gatwick Airport and London Victoria.
In a statement, Network Rail said an engineering train broke down in the early hours of Tuesday morning, blocking one of the platforms at Gatwick Airport. The train was eventually moved by 9am, but delays continued throughout the morning.
Engineers also encountered a problem with the points at London Victoria, which prevented access to several platforms — including 8, 9, 10 and 11, as well as 16 to 19. As a result, Gatwick Express services were suspended.
A spokesperson for Network Rail said:
“We’re sorry to Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express customers who have experienced disruption on the Brighton Main Line today.
Our engineers are working very hard to fix these issues and bring more platforms back into operation as soon as possible. Further work will take place overnight to fully resolve the problems.”
Passengers are being advised to check with their train operator for the latest travel updates before starting their journeys.
