A 49-year-old man called Matthew Johnston, of Haynes Close in Tottenham, London, has been found guilty of a number of serious sexual offences against a young boy in Littlehampton.
The abuse began in 2014, when the victim was just four years old, and continued over several years. Johnston allegedly used his attendance at pop-culture events (such as those themed around superheroes and science-fiction) as part of the grooming process.
In December 2024, Sussex Police were contacted and a specialist investigation was launched. Johnston was arrested and charged with:
Two counts of rape of a child under 13
Two counts of sexual assault of a child under 13
Two counts of causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity
One count of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child
The trial at Hove Crown Court concluded on 10 October 2025, with Johnston found guilty on all counts. He remains in custody, and a further court date is set for 16 January 2026.
Detective Constable Jacob Parkin commended the victim and his family for reporting the abuse and supporting the investigation, saying their courage helped bring the offender to justice and protect others. He also urged anyone who has experienced sexual offences to come forward, either via the police online, by calling 101 or in an emergency by dialling 999.
