A 49-year-old man has been arrested after setting himself alight in a street in St Leonards, police have confirmed.
Officers were called to London Road at around 12.30pm on Friday, February 27, following reports of concern for a man’s welfare.
According to Sussex Police, officers attended the scene and located the man in the street. While they were present, he set himself alight and approached them.
Police said the fire was quickly extinguished at the scene.
The man, who is of no fixed address, was treated by the ambulance service before being arrested on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm.
He has since been taken to hospital, where he is receiving treatment for injuries described as serious at this time.
Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.
