Lewes Bonfire 2024: A Night of Tradition, Fire, and Spectacle

Public safety remains the top priority ahead of this year’s Lewes Bonfire celebrations, which take place on Wednesday, 5 November.

Authorities expect large crowds despite the midweek date and have confirmed a series of travel restrictions to help keep people safe.

    Travel advice

Residents are being urged to stay local, and visitors are asked not to travel to Lewes, as the town’s narrow streets and huge crowds create safety challenges.

Road closures will begin from 4.45pm, affecting:

A27 junction with A277 (Ashcombe Roundabout)

A275 Offham Road and B2116 Plumpton Road

C7 Kingston Road and C324 Wellgreen Lane

A26 junctions with A2029 Malling Street and Mayhew Way

Residents should have vehicles home before 4pm to avoid being caught in closures.

    Rail disruption

Trains will not stop at Lewes, Falmer, Cooksbridge, Glynde or Southease from 5pm on 5 November until the morning of 6 November.
The last London Victoria services stopping at these stations will leave at 3.24pm and 3.54pm.

    Staying safe

Police, fire crews, and St John Ambulance will be on hand throughout the night to maintain order and provide first aid.

    People are reminded:

Report anything suspicious to stewards or police

In an emergency, always dial 999

Do not pick up spent fireworks or torches

    Attend local events

Those outside Lewes are encouraged to choose local and visit nearby community firework displays instead.
