A man has appeared in court charged with kidnap, aggravated vehicle taking and dangerous driving following a serious incident in Hastings.

Alfie Foster, 22, of Crowborough Road, Hastings, is also charged with intentional strangulation, assault on a woman known to him, and theft from a dwelling.

Police were called to St Helen’s Road at around 12.27am on Sunday, 18 January, after a car collided with railings. The passenger, a 23-year-old local woman, was taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. The driver left the scene but was later arrested after officers located him at a nearby address.

Foster appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 20 January, where he pleaded guilty to assault, aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving and theft from a dwelling. He pleaded not guilty to charges of non-fatal strangulation and kidnap.

He was remanded in custody and is due to next appear at Lewes Crown Court on 18 February.

Sussex Police are continuing to investigate and are appealing for witnesses. Anyone who saw what happened, or who has relevant mobile phone, dash cam or CCTV footage, is asked to report it online or call 101, quoting Operation Fleetwood.
