A rare and heart-warming wildlife rescue took place on Brighton beach on Sunday afternoon after an injured puffin was discovered following recent stormy weather.
Brighton & Hove Wildlife Advice & Rescue Service (WARS) were alerted to reports of what was initially believed to be an injured razorbill. However, upon attending the scene, rescuers were delighted to discover the bird was in fact a beautiful puffin, a species rarely seen along the Sussex coast.
The puffin is thought to have been blown inland by strong winds during the recent storms. Thanks to the quick actions of local resident Ben Talbot, the bird was safely rescued before WARS arrived.
The puffin was transported to East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS), where it is currently receiving care and assessment. Plans are now in place for the bird to be transferred to Mallydams Wildlife Hospital for specialist treatment.
WARS praised the members of the public who stepped in to help, thanking “the wonderful couple who saved him” and highlighting the importance of reporting injured wildlife promptly.
The charity relies entirely on public support to continue its vital work rescuing and rehabilitating injured animals across the region. Anyone wishing to support Brighton & Hove Wildlife Advice & Rescue Service can donate via

Residents are reminded to avoid handling injured wildlife themselves where possible and to contact trained rescuers immediately for advice and assistance.
