A Horsham man has been found guilty of a series of child rape and sexual abuse offences following a lengthy investigation by Sussex Police.

Keith Clifton, 58, of Tanyard Close, Horsham, was convicted at Hove Trial Centre after a two‑week trial that concluded on Friday, 23 January. The offences relate to the prolonged abuse of a young girl over several years.

    Years of Abuse Exposed

According to Sussex Police, Clifton began subjecting the victim—then just four years old—to sexualised behaviour and assaults. On her fifth birthday, the abuse escalated into rape, continuing regularly until she was around 13.

The victim, now in her 20s, bravely came forward in 2018, prompting Clifton’s arrest at his home. Specialist officers supported her throughout the investigation.

    Convictions and Charges

Clifton was originally charged with multiple offences, including:

    • Six counts of rape of a girl under 13
    • Five counts of assault by penetration
    • Four counts of sexual assault by touching
    • Two counts of sexual activity with a child
    • One count of causing or inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity

The jury found him guilty of:

    • Six counts of rape
    • Three counts of sexual assault by touching
    • Two counts of assault by penetration
    • Two counts of sexual activity with a child
    • One count of causing/inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity

Several remaining charges resulted in a hung jury.

Clifton has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced on Monday, 23 February at the same court.

    Sussex Police Praise Victim’s Courage

Detective Sergeant Ellen Jones commended the survivor for her extraordinary bravery:

“I cannot commend the victim enough for the incredible strength and courage she has shown to support this investigation and help bring her abuser to justice.”

She added that the woman continues to receive full support from Sussex Police and partner agencies.

DS Jones also praised the investigative team for their work on what she described as a complex and distressing case, emphasising that another dangerous offender has now been removed from the community.

Police Urge Survivors to Come Forward

Sussex Police are encouraging anyone affected by sexual abuse—regardless of how long ago it occurred—to report it.

“If you are a victim of sexual offending, no matter how long ago, please report it to us. We will do all we can to get you the justice you deserve,” DS Jones said.
