Every summer, the Western Lawns on Eastbourne’s seafront come alive with the roar of sirens, the thrum of rescue helicopters, and the crowd’s applause as real-life heroes take centre stage. The Eastbourne 999 Emergency Services Display is back, bringing two full days of action-packed demonstrations, live rescue scenarios, and behind-the-scenes access to the vital work of our emergency services.
This year’s display, marking its 38th anniversary, offers visitors a rare chance to see the UK’s frontline teams in action—from Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire & Rescue to HM Coastguard, RNLI, and South East Coast Ambulance Service. On Saturday and Sunday, from 10:30am and 11am respectively, the seafront will transform into a live arena where bravery, skill, and rapid response are on full display. It’s a free event, making it accessible for families, thrill-seekers, and anyone curious about the incredible work done by emergency crews every day.
One moment you might see firefighters tackle a simulated blaze, controlling a chip-pan fire or cutting into a wrecked vehicle to free a trapped driver. Minutes later, police dogs demonstrate their obedience and strength, while paramedics show how they stabilise trauma patients before transport. Lifeboats launch just metres from the beach, joining forces with the Coastguard in dramatic sea rescues that mimic real emergencies off Britain’s shores.
But this event is far more than just spectacle. It’s a weekend of education, inspiration, and community connection. Children can clamber inside fire engines, test out hoses, and watch CPR demonstrations, while adults get to speak directly with police officers, ask paramedics about their work, or learn how to volunteer with the RNLI. Every demonstration is rooted in real procedures and real risks, offering a rare insight into the lifesaving work these teams do daily.
Eastbourne’s 999 Display isn’t run by one organisation, but by a coalition of public safety bodies who understand the importance of engaging the public. That collaboration includes Eastbourne Borough Council, the Eastbourne Community Safety Partnership, the British Transport Police, Network Rail, and numerous volunteers and charities. This shared mission—to educate, recruit, and build trust—shapes every part of the event.
There’s a festival feel too. Food stalls, children’s rides, and community traders fill the lawns, adding to the sense of celebration. While the backdrop of Eastbourne’s coastline adds cinematic flair, the real stars are the men and women in uniform who work in some of the toughest conditions imaginable.
Visitors arriving by train can easily reach the Western Lawns with a short walk from Eastbourne station, and those driving in are guided via the A22 and directed to parking nearby. A full programme is available to download, so it’s easy to plan your day around your favourite events and attractions.
As the climate and society change, so too do the challenges faced by the emergency services. Whether responding to coastal emergencies, wildfires, traffic accidents, or large-scale incidents, these teams adapt constantly. The 999 Display is not just a celebration, it’s a reminder of the complexity and importance of the work they do—and how crucial public awareness and support can be.
The 999 Display makes for a thrilling day out, but it also leaves a lasting impression. For many children, it may be the moment they decide to become a firefighter or paramedic. For adults, it’s a unique chance to witness the precision and pressure of frontline work. For all, it’s an unforgettable celebration of service, sacrifice, and community.
