The Hampden Park level crossing in Eastbourne has now reopened after being closed for several hours this morning (Monday) due to a railway signalling fault.

The closure caused significant traffic disruption across the area, with motorists forced to find alternative routes to cross the railway.

A spokesperson for Network Rail confirmed the fault was caused by an axle counter issue, a key part of the railway’s safety system.

“We’re very sorry for the disruption in the Hampden Park area this morning, which was caused by a fault with an axle counter. These devices play a vital role in railway signalling by counting the wheels of trains as they pass over each section of track, helping signallers know exactly where trains are.”

When the system failed, two signals automatically turned red and the level crossing barriers were lowered to protect passengers and road users.

Engineers traced the issue to a damaged cable and worked on site throughout the morning. The crossing has since reopened, and normal operations have resumed.

“We’d like to thank passengers and local residents for their patience and understanding while we resolved the issue,” Network Rail added.
