A former police recruit who failed to disclose key information during the vetting process has had gross misconduct proven against him following an accelerated hearing.

Ex-PC Cameron Young did not reveal that he had previously been subject to a disciplinary investigation when applying to join Sussex Police. The omission came to light during internal checks, triggering misconduct proceedings.

An accelerated gross misconduct hearing concluded on Thursday, 12 February, and determined that Young would have been dismissed without notice had he not already resigned from the force.

Following the outcome, he has also been placed on the barred list held by the College of Policing, preventing him from serving as a police officer in any other force in England and Wales.

Chief Inspector Jim Smith said: “We take vetting extremely seriously to ensure we recruit the best possible candidates to serve the public.

“Our processes are thorough, robust and subject to regular review, helping us to identify any discrepancies and take appropriate action.

“This hearing outcome should send a strong message to anyone thinking of applying to join the police, and the wider public, that we are fully committed to rooting out anyone who should not be part of our service.”
