A former Sussex Police investigator has pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office after starting a sexual relationship with a woman he met during an investigation.
David Gamlin, 58, admitted at Southwark Crown Court on Monday to wilful neglect or misconduct by a holder of public office. The court heard that between June and September 2021, Gamlin contacted and engaged in a sexual relationship with the woman through his professional role.
According to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), an investigation into Gamlin was launched in August 2022 following a mandatory referral from Sussex Police. The inquiry found that the former investigator, based with Worthing CID, failed to uphold expected professional standards by pursuing an improper personal relationship while acting in an official capacity.
Gamlin, of no fixed address, left Sussex Police in March 2023. He is scheduled to be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on 6 October.
A spokesperson for the IOPC said “The public expects police staff and investigators to act with integrity at all times. This case shows that abuse of position will not be tolerated.”
Sussex Police confirmed their cooperation with the IOPC investigation and stressed their commitment to maintaining professional standards within the force.
