Firefighters were called to a blaze at the Eastbourne wastewater treatment works on Prince William Parade late on Sunday night (24 August).
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) received reports of the smell of smoke at 10.55pm and crews from Eastbourne and Hailsham were sent to the scene.
Working alongside Southern Water staff, firefighters investigated the site and discovered the fire had been caused by an electrical fault.
An ESFRS spokesperson said:
“We were called at 10.55pm on 24 August to Prince William Parade, Eastbourne, following reports of the smell of smoke. Crews from Eastbourne and Hailsham assisted Southern Water with investigating the site. Firefighters used breathing apparatus, thermal imaging cameras and gas detectors to assist.”
The fire was brought under control, and the incident was handed back to Southern Water just after 1.00am. Crews left the scene by 1.13am.
No injuries have been reported.
