Six fire engines were sent to an industrial building fire in Berwick in the early hours of this morning (24 February).

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said it was called at 3.06am to reports of a blaze at a premises on Alfriston Road.

By 3.57am, six fire engines, a Command Support Unit and officers were in attendance. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one main jet and a firefighting foam jet to tackle the flames.

Residents living nearby were urged to keep windows and doors closed, while motorists were advised to avoid the area.

An update at 4.57am confirmed that six fire engines remained at the scene, with crews continuing to use firefighting foam, two main jets and one hosereel jet to bring the fire under control.

By 6.15am, the service said it was beginning to scale back resources, although firefighting operations continued with crews assessing conditions and dealing with remaining hotspots. There were no reports of any casualties.

Police attended to assist with traffic management during the incident.

At 7.20am, crews were still on scene checking for any deep-seated hotspots. The road has since reopened, but drivers are being asked to avoid the area where possible due to the busy morning traffic and ongoing fire service activity.

A fire investigation will take place in due course to establish the cause of the blaze.
