Police in Eastbourne were called to an abandoned building on the evening of 25 January after reports that a group of youths had climbed onto the roof, discharging fire extinguishers and shouting at passers-by.

The group initially refused to leave, forcing officers to spend significant time safely locating and bringing them down. Three youths were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and causing wasteful employment of police time.

After officers dealt with the situation and issued strong words of advice, the youths were later de-arrested and taken home. Sussex Police confirmed that the investigation into the offences is ongoing and appropriate action will follow.

Sergeant Knight of the Eastbourne Neighbourhood Policing Team said:

“Entering abandoned buildings is extremely dangerous and can put both those involved and emergency responders, as well as the wider community, at risk. While trespass is usually a civil matter, we will take firm action where criminal offences occur. We urge parents to discuss these dangers with any young people in their care and ask the public to report concerns to us at the time.”

Sussex Police continue to emphasise the importance of safety and responsible behaviour, particularly around abandoned buildings and hazardous locations.
