Eastbourne RNLI Warns Public of High Cliff Fall Risk at Beachy Head
Eastbourne’s RNLI crew is sounding the alarm after identifying hazardous cliff conditions during a recent service call near Beachy Head. The volunteer lifeboat team observed alarming erosion along the cliff face, including fragile overhangs that may collapse without notice.
The warning highlights a high risk of cliff falls, especially in areas where the instability is not immediately visible from the top. Such erosion can give way suddenly, creating a dangerous scenario for anyone walking too close to the edge.
Public Urged to Keep Clear as Cliff Erosion Worsens
RNLI officials are urging residents and visitors to keep a minimum of five meters away from cliff edges at all times and to keep dogs on leads. The seemingly solid ground may be undercut by erosion, making it unsafe even a few steps from the edge.
This isn’t just a cautionary message—it’s a life-saving one. The erosion observed includes overhangs that appear secure but are severely weakened underneath. A collapse could happen at any time, especially after wet weather or changing coastal conditions.
In the event of a coastal emergency, the RNLI reminds the public to dial 999 and ask for the coastguard immediately.
The charity, which relies on donations and volunteers, continues to carry out critical rescue and safety missions along the coast and encourages everyone to respect the natural dangers of cliffside areas.
