A man who drove at 100mph and caused a serious crash near Hassocks has been jailed.

Brandon Lee, 28, of Forest Close, Horsham, left a female passenger with life-changing injuries after losing control of a Ford Fiesta in the early hours of 8 December 2023.

Lee failed to stop for police after driving at excessive speed on the A23 near Pyecombe. He then took the vehicle down Clayton Hill on the A273, driving on the wrong side of the road before crashing into a phone box on a bend.

Emergency services responded to the scene, where the vehicle was found wrecked and the passenger seriously injured. The road was closed while the car was recovered.

Lee was arrested and charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He admitted the offence and appeared for sentencing at Lewes Crown Court on 25 April.

He was sentenced to two years in prison and disqualified from driving for two years and eight months.

Sergeant Joe McGregor from the Surrey and Sussex Roads Policing Unit said:

“Lee’s driving was reckless and dangerous. He is incredibly lucky that he did not cause a fatality that night, but this collision continues to have a lasting impact on the victim.

“We know that one in three collisions in Sussex occur because drivers are going too fast. Speeding is one of the main reasons why people are killed or seriously injured on our roads.

“We are pleased that a dangerous driver has been taken off our roads.”
