Police were called to George Street in Hove on Friday afternoon (4 July) following reports of an attempted robbery at the Nationwide Building Society.
According to eyewitnesses who shared images with Sussex News and ImJustBrighton, a man was swiftly detained by officers outside the branch just after 12:30pm. Members of the public reportedly cheered as police arrested the suspect and secured a knife and imitation firearm, both of which were later placed into evidence bags.

A spokesperson for Sussex Police said:
“Police responded to an incident at Nationwide Building Society in George Street, Hove on Friday (4 July) at 12.35pm. A 27-year-old man was arrested for possession of an imitation firearm and a knife, which were both in a bag. Enquiries are ongoing.”
The scene drew a large crowd as officers secured the area and conducted initial investigations.
There are no reports of injuries at this stage, and the branch is expected to remain closed temporarily while police continue their enquiries.
