A man who subjected a woman in her 60s to a prolonged campaign of violence in Crowborough has been jailed for three years.

Ashley Gaunt, 64, of Poplar Crescent, West Ewell, repeatedly assaulted and verbally abused the victim between April 2024 and May 2025.

The abuse began in April 2024 when Gaunt repeatedly punched the woman and subjected her to ongoing verbal attacks. The violence escalated over the following months.

The final and most serious incident happened on 12 May 2025. Gaunt approached the victim, threatened to kill her, dragged her by the hair and attempted to smother her. The woman managed to escape and report the attack. Gaunt was located and arrested the same day.

He was later charged following a wider investigation.

On 10 December 2025, Gaunt appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court charged with five counts of assault, one count of intentional suffocation and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He pleaded guilty and was bailed ahead of sentencing.

At Lewes Crown Court on 11 February 2026, Gaunt was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and handed a 10-year restraining order.

PC Tobie Whitten, who led the investigation, said: “Ashley Gaunt left the victim in fear of the nights, as that is when she felt she would suffer most.

“The victim bravely came forward and reported the violence and abuse she had suffered at the hands of Gaunt, and he now sits behind bars after admitting to what he did.

“Women and girls should never fall victim to physical, emotional or psychological harm. We must continue to strive for change, and ensure men who feel they can behave in such a way are held accountable.
