Peacehaven, East Sussex – Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) has taken over the investigation into a deliberate fire at the Peacehaven Community Centre & Mosque on 4 October 2025, which caused extensive damage to the building’s front entrance and a nearby vehicle. Fire crews were called at approximately 9:50 pm, and although the blaze was significant, no one was seriously injured.
CCTV footage captured two masked individuals approaching the mosque, spraying an accelerant, and setting it alight. Sussex Police initially arrested four men aged 22 to 46 on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, all of whom were later released on conditional bail while inquiries continued.
Following new evidence, the investigation was escalated to CTPSE, highlighting the serious nature of the attack. Two men, Ricky Ryder (38) of Seaford and Jack Slowey (34) of Peacehaven, have now been charged with arson with intent to endanger life. They are remanded in custody and are due to appear at the Old Bailey on 14 November.

Authorities have increased patrols at local places of worship and are treating the incident as a potential hate crime. Community leaders described the attack as “shocking and deeply unsettling,” emphasizing the importance of solidarity and vigilance. CTPSE confirmed that enquiries are ongoing to determine the motivation behind the arson, including any extremist or hate-related elements.
Police are appealing to the public for any dash-cam, doorbell, or mobile phone footage from around 9:45–10 pm on 4 October, or information about suspicious activity in the area, to support the investigation. The swift escalation of the inquiry underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating attacks on places of worship in the UK.
