Emergency services have cordoned off a section of Hyde Road, Eastbourne, following the discovery of a bottle containing an unidentified liquid inside a residential property.
Police were called to the scene at 5.27pm on Monday, 23 June. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team attended to assess the item and a safety cordon was swiftly established.
As a precaution, residents in Hyde Road and surrounding streets—Camden Road, Calverley Road, West Terrace, Bath Road and Grove Road—are being asked to leave their homes by 9am on Tuesday morning (24 June) to allow for a planned evacuation.
Detective Superintendent Jon Robeson said:
“Our priority is to keep people safe. We are satisfied that there is no immediate risk to residents, and the evacuation can be completed safely and effectively during daylight hours.”

He added that uniformed officers will be present from the morning to support and advise residents, and thanked the community for their cooperation:
“We appreciate the support and patience of those affected as we bring this incident to a safe conclusion. Public safety is our absolute priority.”
Around 160 homes fall within the safety cordon. The area remains closed off while investigations continue.
Police are reassuring residents that there is no immediate danger, and updates will follow as the situation develops.
