Drusillas Zoo has announced the sad passing of Moteck, their much-loved male Sulawesi crested black macaque, who peacefully died in his old age.
Moteck, who reached the remarkable age of nearly 23, far surpassing the typical life expectancy for his species, joined the Drusillas family in 2010 after arriving from Monkey Park in Israel. Over the past 15 years, he became an unforgettable presence at the zoo, delighting visitors and forming strong bonds with the keepers who cared for him.
Even in his later years, Moteck carried himself with a majestic, statesman-like air, whether enjoying the sunshine or indulging in his favourite treats. Zoo Manager Mark reflected on Moteck’s impact, saying: “Having worked with Moteck from the day he arrived, from letting him out of his transport crate from Israel to watching him grow into the superb alpha male he became, it is going to be hard not seeing him every day. He leaves some big footprints to fill.”
Head Keeper Gemma shared beautiful photos of Moteck, highlighting the deep connection between the macaque and the zoo team.

Moteck’s legacy will live on through little Elsie, born at the zoo this January. As one of the most genetically significant males of his species in Europe, Moteck made a vital contribution to the preservation of Sulawesi crested black macaques, supporting conservation efforts for this critically endangered primate.
Drusillas Zoo said: “Moteck, we will never forget you and we thank you for the vital impact you’ve made for your species
