Dignitaries, community groups, and members of the public gather to remember fallen Indian soldiers at historic Downland site

The Annual Chattri Remembrance Service took place on Sunday 8 June 2025, at the Chattri Memorial near Patcham, Brighton, to pay tribute to the Indian soldiers who died during the First World War.

Held at 2.30pm on the historic site where Hindu and Sikh soldiers who perished in Brighton war hospitals between 1914 and 1915 were cremated, the service brought together community leaders, dignitaries, and members of the public in a moving tribute of remembrance and respect.

The Chattri, a Grade II listed memorial built on the South Downs, was unveiled in 1921 by the Prince of Wales. It stands as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by undivided Indian Army soldiers who were treated in Brighton after serving on the Western Front.

Sunday’s ceremony opened with a welcome from Davinder Dhillon OBE, DL, Chairperson of the Chattri Memorial Group. This was followed by Sikh and Hindu prayers delivered by Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara (Hounslow) and Bindu Vachhani respectively.

A wreath-laying ceremony, led by the Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex, Andrew Blackman, was followed by The Exhortation and a moment of silence. The Last Post, Reveille, and Kohima Epitaph were also performed, honouring the fallen with solemn military tradition.

The Lord-Lieutenant also gave an address, paying tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of the Indian soldiers who travelled thousands of miles to serve during the Great War.

Following the service, guests were invited to refreshments at Patcham High School and had the opportunity to view the Chattri Exhibition, which details the journey of Indian soldiers from India to the hospitals of Brighton during the war.

The Chattri memorial bears an inscription in English, Hindi, and Punjabi that reads:
“In honour of these soldiers of the Indian Army whose mortal remains were committed to fire.”

All were welcomed to the event, which continues to serve as an enduring symbol of unity, respect, and remembrance.
