Late morning travel across East Sussex was thrown into chaos after a car overturned on the A27 westbound near the Southerham roundabout, forcing emergency services to close the road.
The incident happened at around 10am during a busy period, bringing traffic to a standstill while crews attended and recovery operations took place. Long delays quickly built up along the A27, impacting motorists and football fans heading to the Amex Stadium.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “Emergency services received a report of a collision approaching the Southerham roundabout on the A27 near Lewes at about 9.30am today.”
Supporters travelling to watch Brighton & Hove Albion take on Liverpool FC were among those affected, with Seagulls Travel coaches reported to be running over an hour late picking up fans.
Due to the disruption, officials confirmed kick-off at the stadium was delayed until 12:45pm to allow supporters more time to arrive.
Motorists attempting to avoid the A27 diverted via the A259, causing further congestion through Newhaven, bringing the town close to a standstill. Bus services running along the A259 between Brighton and Eastbourne were also heavily delayed after becoming caught up in traffic.
The A27 was briefly reopened with one lane to ease congestion before being closed again to allow full recovery of the overturned vehicle.
Traffic monitoring service Sussex Travel Watch has since confirmed the A27 is now fully open.
In a separate incident, emergency services were also called to the Beddingham to Newhaven road (A26), where recovery crews are reported to be at the scene.
Drivers are advised delays may continue while traffic clears.
